Uniforms of the United States Army Many volunteer regiments during the Civil War patterned their uniforms after the colorful French Zouaves. Shown here is the uniform of the 5th New York Volunteer Regiment. His equipment includes musket and bayonet, cartridge box (on his right hip), canteen, haversack, and bayonet scabbard. He carries a blanket roll and knapsack on his back.
